Meals on Wheels
History
San Pedro Meals on Wheels, Inc., was founded in 1972 by Church Women United of the First Presbyterian Church and the First Methodist Church in San Pedro. Many members of the First Presbyterian Church volunteer their services. Their office and kitchen facilities are made available on our church premises.
San Pedro Meals on Wheels, Inc., is a non profit corporation, community-based, and non sectarian. It is operated by a Board of Directors composed of civic-minded volunteers and business leaders in our community The concept of delivering nutritious, hot meals to those in need originated in England during World War II and since then has spread to major cities throughout the United States, and in other countries.
Purpose & Method
Although many patrons are retired, Meals on Wheels is a service for anyone who is unable to prepare a nutritious meal. This could include long-term disability or chronic illness, or it may be someone recovering from hospitalization, who is housebound for a period of time. If you can’t get to the grocery store, if you can’t cook your dinner, then Meals on Wheels is for you.
Food is purchased from wholesale suppliers and local markets, bringing you fresh vegetables, fresh fish and USDA certified meat and poultry. Food from non commercial sources cannot be used because of Los Angeles County Department of Health regulations. The kitchen and preparation are continually rated “A”, the highest any food service organization may receive. The paid staff includes a general manager and cook. All others are volunteers including the board of directors.
Meals are packaged immediately after being cooked and are delivered to homes immediately by volunteers using their own cars. Each delivery includes a delicious nutritious piping hot dinner for midday and a light snack for later. Since 1972, nearly 1,100,000 quality meals have been served. Because this is a volunteer organization, the cost of each delivery is only $6.50 per day. This amount doesn’t cover the full cost, which is made up by contributions from individuals and organizations. Telephone 310.832.7335. How to help
Tax deductible contributions are always welcomed and may be sent to San Pedro Meals on Wheels, Inc., 731 S. Averill Avenue, San Pedro California 90732. California State Tax ID# is 222-0712-0 and the federal tax ID number is 95-2803612.
Volunteers are always needed for help in the kitchen one or more days per week for 3 or 4 hours, also for drivers and deliverers one or more days per week for 2-3 hours per day, or for occasional substitutes. Please call 310.832.7335.
