Pastor Neal's NotesAdvent Week Two: Picking Up Speed I saw a bumper sticker
the
other day which said, "Once you get over the hill, you pick
up speed!" I think that bumper
sticker
referred to the someone's age, but here, at First Pres, I think the
first Sunday of Advent must be our "hill." That's because
we began the season in a measured way, observing the Sacrament of the
Lord's Supper and some good old advent hymns. But now things really
start moving fast. Here are a few examples: This Friday, December 7,
will be "Candy Cane Lane," a Christmas Party that we
throw with our neighbors out in Weymouth Corners from 5 until 9 p.m.
The younger children will have a chance to decorate cookies and sit
on Santa's lap. The older children will have a chance to sing carols
and listen to San Pedro's High School Band. Our Angel and Cherub's
Choirs are scheduled to perform, and we will also have a chance to
enjoy a classic Christmas film. This year, it will be projected from
Alva's across the street onto a sail hung from the outside of our
building. This Saturday, December
8, will be "Christmas in the Holy Land," a special
dinner and program organized by our Outrigger's Club. Carolyn
Ehrlich is coordinating the menu, and several others are bringing
"props." Please contact Carolyn or Shirley Gonzales if you
would like to attend. This Sunday, December 9,
we
will see "The Very Important Christmas Pageant,"
a fresh retelling of the very old story recounted by our Children's
Choirs. Mrs. Sirianni always does a great job on these programs, and
Mrs. Anderson's very young choirs will add a great note of joy to
this year, too. I expect they will bring much energy to our worship
at 9:30 a.m. In addition to these
church
functions, some of us may have work or neighborhood parties to attend
within the next seven days. The bad news is that you might not
really be ready for all of this. The good news is that you can still
have lots of fun. Thus, I hope you'll join us as we "pick up
speed" on the way to Bethlehem. I'll see you in church!

ChristmasFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaFor
other uses, see Christmas (disambiguation).
Christmas is an annual holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus. Christmas festivities often combine the commemoration of Jesus' birth with various secular customs, many of which have been influenced by earlier winter festivals. The date as a birthdate for Jesus is traditional, and is not considered to be his actual date of birth. In most places around the world, Christmas Day is celebrated on December 25. Christmas Eve is the preceding day, December 24. Directed by Lesley Sirianni, they rehearse weekly on Wednesdays from 4:30 - 5:30 at the church. Random Fact of the Week Q: What exactly is Frankincense? (Scroll Down For Answer) A: Frankincense is a sweet smelling gum resin derived from certain Boswellia trees ( Boswellia sacra Flueck) which, at the time of Christ, grew in Arabia, India, and Ethiopia. Tradition says that it was presented to the Christ Child by Balthasar, the black king from Ethiopia or Saba. The frankincense trade was at its height during the days of the Roman Empire. At that time this resin was considered as valuable as gems or precious metals. The Romans burned frankincense on their altars and at cremations. |
