    Pastor Neal's Notes

         Relationships of Love

What's the secret to a loving relationship?
To some extent, the answer varies from one relationship to the next. But I think that communication must be a central piece: communication of our feelings, communication of our thoughts, communication of our hopes and needs. We need to be able to voice these these things, and we need to be able to hear them from the people whom we wish to love.

That's why our worship service on this "Valentine's" Sunday will focus upon communication: communication with our God in prayer.James' very famous text on prayer: Are any of you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. (James 5:13-14) The book of James has already told us several things about this topic in the last few weeks, but the culmination of that book is

We'll spend some time this Sunday thinking about this form of communication with our God. Then, after church, we'll invite you to experience a different sort of communication: the Annual Sweetheart Breakfast of our church. This is a wonderful chance for food and fellowship with other members of our church, and it is also a wonderful cause, because all proceeds go to support our Youth Group, who will be serving us hearty food and offering us "sweet treats" for the ones we love.

Finally, we will conclude this "Sweetheart Breakfast" with still another form of communication: the Annual Congregational Meeting of our church. Shirley Snow has worked hard to compile written reports from every single ministry at First Presbyterian. You will have an opportunity during this meeting to review these reports and to ask any questions that come to mind. You will also have an opportunity to review the budget that our Session has approved and to elect the corporate officers of our church. Finally, our denomination's Book of Order provides you the opportunity to approve my terms of call (i.e., salary) at this event. So, to quote a popular advertisement: "Come hungry [BUT] leave happy."

Honestly, I'm always happy to share the work of Christ with you. That's because Kim and I have felt loved at First Presbyterian Church from the very moment we arrived. We strive to share that love with others, and we thank God for you.

I'll see you on Sunday!

Neal

"The Purpose Driven Life" by Rick Warren

The Headley Beta Group is starting a discussion of "The Purpose Driven Life" on Sunday, March 2nd.  The group meets at 11:30 a.m. on the first Sunday of the month in the "Green Room" upstairs.  Everyone is welcome.  You can purchase the book ahead of time, or they can get it for you.

See you there.

Random Fact of the Week

Q:  1.  If you have a bunch of super powers and have done some awe inspiring, amazing things with them (let's say tearing a mountain out by it's roots and throwing it in the sea in order to save a city from a tsunami), but never had the right motivation, what do you get at the end of your life?

2.  What do you get at the end of your life if you gave away all your money and property to feed the poor and went and worked with them for your whole life, but didn't have the right motivation?

3.  What is the only motivation that makes anything worth while?

          (Scroll Down For Answer)

A:
1.  Nothing
