Quick News

Coming March 15th:

..

    Pastor Neal's Notes

                   "Lent 2008"

In case you haven't heard, Easter is coming early this year—it will be here before the end of March. That means we are entering the second full week of "Lent"*—the season of preparation for Easter. In ancient times, the church used this season to offer classes for converts (and prospective converts) about this Christian faith. Then, the practice spread to a time of spiritual focus for all believers—regardless of their piety or lineage in the church.

In keeping with this tradition, our congregation is offering a variety of classes for new and “seasoned” devotees to the Christian Faith. Some meet in the church, some meet in restaurants, some meet in private homes. Some are held in the morning, some in the afternoon, and some are held at night. Some use the Bible as their sole curriculum; others embrace a variety of spiritual and practical guides. Most of these groups choose their own curriculum, and that choice changes from time to time. Thus, I might be slightly out of date. But here is the latest information that I have (listed by place and time)

Sunday morning, 8:30 a.m. Bob Bradford is leading a weekly
study of Messianic prophecies that were fulfilled by Christ.
Some of these are quite straightforward, but many were fulfilled
in quite surprising ways. This is a lively group with a variety
of opinions. Be prepared to talk, think, and learn.

Sunday midday, 11:30 a.m. Sue and Keith Headley are leading a
monthly study of Rick Warren's best-selling book, the "Purpose
Driven Life". They meet on the first Sunday of each month in the
      Green Room upstairs.

Sunday evening, 7 p.m. Paul Purdy will be leading a monthly
study of Genesis starting in March. This group meets in a
variety of private homes. Contact Paul for the next meeting
      place and date.

Monday evening, 7 p.m. Kim Neuenschwander will be leading a
weekly women's study of Acts in the McCormick Room beginning
in March. In order to prepare for this exciting book, they will
skim through Mark and Luke during the next 2 weeks.

Wednesday morning, 7 a.m. Shirley Gonzales leads of weekly
study Luke's gospel at Carrow's Restaurant on Western Avenue.
Good food and good fellowship are the Hallmarks' of this
longstanding group. They generally study a chapter or two at a
time until each book is done. Then, they normally alternate
between the Old Testament and the New.

Wednesday afternoon, 1 p.m. Kim Neuenschwander repeats the
weekly Acts study for a different group in the McCormick Room

Wednesday evening, 7 p.m. Keith Headley is leading our weekly
prayer group at the church until Rupert Loyd is well enough to
      return.

Wednesday evening, 7 p.m. I am leading a weekly study of the
Westminster Shorter Catechism at the home of Erik and Heather
Larson. Heather prepares a wonderful meal and often leads this
group. I'm just “filling in” for a few weeks.

Each of these groups welcomes new members, and each could be a real blessing for those who wish to start a deeper walk of faith in the weeks to come. I hope you'll check one out!

Have a great week!

Neal

Resources for Lent

Lent provides an opportunity to learn what it means to follow Christ. Planning significant worship for the season of Lent and Easter can be challenging. With that in mind, we wanted to bring all of our resources together in one place so that you can easily find just what you need when you need it.

Here you will find Bible studies, liturgies, multilingual and worship resources, archived. . . <Complete Article>

Random Fact of the Week

Q:  Where did the word "Lent" come from?
          (Scroll Down For Answer)

A:   The word "Lent" comes from the old Anglo-Saxon word lengten, which means "springtime," named so for the time of the year in which it occurs.  Lent is an opportunity not an obligation. It is not commanded by our Lord, nor is it even mentioned in the Bible. Those Christians who observe it do so because they find it a helpful opportunity for repentance and renewal, for the strengthening of their faith. Christians are free to observe or not observe Lent.

So, Lent is a kind of Christian "Spring cleaning for the soul."  :-)
