Happy Birthday!
Did
you know that this Sunday, May 11, is your birthday? You
may have thought is was in March or September or some other month.
Actually, it's in May. That's because all of us are part of Christ's
church, and the Christian Church has recognized Pentecost (May 11 in
'08) as the birthday of our family for centuries. The church chose
Pentecost for it's birthday because the church was still
demoralized (or, at least, confused) for several weeks after Jesus
died. Even the experience of Easter Sunday and Christ's many
appearances after death didn't really spur his disciples to do what
they must do. Then, after 10 full days of prayer, the Holy
Spirit came on them at Pentecost (cff. Acts 2) , empowering them to
proclaim the good news that they had seen and heard. This Sunday, our
chancel
choir will be proclaiming the good news of God's grace with a special
performance of George Frederic Handel's "Utretcht Jubilate."
Handel's "Messiah" is probably the best known choral work
in the Western World, and most of us have sung at least some
part of his "Hallelujah Chorus." But we would never have
sung that chorus if the queen of England had not heard his joyful
"Jubilate" first. This music brought her such pleasure
that she commissioned the Messiah and offered G.F. Handel a great
salary for life. What a
deal! Since
this Sunday is also Mother's Day, you can get a good deal from our
Children's Ministry commission on Mother's Day Corsages. If you
haven't got one yet, call Connie Read (310-833-7105). We charge much
less than the florists (just $5 each), and all proceeds will offset
the cost of Christian Summer Camps for our kids. Finally, we know that Mother's Day can be difficult for some women--especially those who could not bear children. But so many of these women have been "surrogate" mothers to countless generations of children who knew and loved them at our church. Thus, we will give small tokens of appreciation to every woman in the church on this special day.

Crew Car Wash a Success At America's Tire on Western this last Sunday, Venturing Crew 731 poured on the "elbow grease" in order to get it off of your car, truck, or van. And boy did they. The group raised almost $600. The majority of money raised was in pre-sales and First Pres. played no small part in reaching that total. Money raised in pre-sales will go into the individual account of the person(s) who sold the ticket(s). These personal account funds may be used by members to pay for trips, personal supplies, dues, you name it. It gives the members a chance to earn their way, learn to deal with people in a one on one situation, gives some control over funds they themselves worked hard to raise, and helps those who need it. Thank you to all who made the car wash a big success. Contact: Crew Advisor Eric V. Beck Empowered to share Good NewsWCC presidents
