"Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"

"Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved--both you and your household."

(Acts 16:30-31)

What is the essence of salvation? And how do you attain it? Perhaps the most succinct answer in all of Scripture comes from Acts 16:30-31 (the passage quoted above). But, once you scratch the surface, even this has surprising depth. Besides "going to heaven", what does it really mean to be saved? And how does our faith affect the future of those living in our household? Our protestant forebears wrestled mightily with these questions, and they summarized the teaching of Scripture with 4 key convictions (or means) of salvation:

Solely in Christ

Solely through Scripture

Solely through faith

Solely by grace

My sermons will focus on these convictions during the next 4 weeks, focusing upon the power (and the grace) they bring to us. I hope you'll join us.

Finally, don't forget our annual church picnic scheduled right after worship on this Sunday, September 7, at Fort MacArthur. This should be a wonderful way to celebrate a new season of fun and fellowship here at First Presbyterian Church.

I'll see you soon!

Neal

Pastor Needs Housing!

Do you have an extra bedroom in your house? Would you like to earn about $3,000 in the next 5 months? A Presbyterian Pastor named Scott Beck is looking for a room to sleep in while he undergoes training at the Los Angeles Fire Academy in San Pedro. The training is rigorous, and the study is demanding, so he won't have a lot of time to socialize. All he requests is a quiet bedroom, bath, and space for a miniature frig and microwave oven. The Academy ruins from September 22 until early February. Call Scott at 805-798-5789 if you are intersted.
