The Messenger Table of Contents "Questions of Faith" ![]() by Rev. Neal Neuenchwander
If you could ask God just one or two questions and know He would reply, what would those questions be? Many people ask about a hardship in their lives or a tragedy in the world. These questions often start with "why". Other folks ask for guidance--ways to break a destructive habit or reach a particular goal. These questions often start with "how". Still other folks ask God to intervene--causing changes in the world around them that might make their lives easier in some way. These questions usually start with "please". Several years ago, I preached a series of sermons that addressed some of the most common questions people ask. Why is there so much suffering in the world? Why do the "bad guys" win in certain times and places? Why should I go to church at all? Etc. I also addressed questions that are of particular interest to Christians. How can I use the Bible practically? How can I deal with other believers who bug me? How can I put my doubts to rest? And so on. Then, I addressed a set of questions that address specific doctrines of our faith. How is Jesus so much better than others heroes? What's so good about "Good Friday"? And what is the Holy Spirit, anyway? Etc. Most people at First Pres. found this series to be quite helpful, and I promised to bring it back in due time. I'm planning to keep that promise in 2011, but I want to address the questions that YOU are asking--not just questions I made up all by myself. Thus, I'm inviting each person who reads this article to submit a few questions for the series. You don't need to give your name. Just tell me what you'd ask of God (or a helpful Christian leader) if you could meet Him face to face. If you'd like to contribute, just slip a note in my box at the church or send your questions through the church's web site. We can also sit down and chat, if you'd like. My prayer is that this series will help you to break through some of the personal, practical obstacles that may have challenged your Christian Faith. I'll see you in Church!
p.s. Linda Culbertson, our Executive Presbyter, will be preaching for me this Sunday, August 15, while I visit with my 90 year old mother. Then, I'll return the following week with a message of God's grace revealed in nature and in the book of Psalms.
