"More Fun Stuff"

Pastor Neal
by Rev. Neal Neuenchwander

Last week, I shared a number of witty quotes that I have gleaned from several months of reading. Several of you enjoyed them, so I thought I would pass on a few more.

Age

  • Don't laugh at youth for his affectations; he is only trying on one face after another to find his own. (Logan Pearsall Smith)

  • As a white candle in a holy place, so is the beauty of an aged face. (Joseph Campbell)

  • There's many a good tune played on an old fiddle. (Samuel Butler)

  • We cannot live in the afternoon of life according to the program of life's morning. (Carl Jung)

Sports

  • Football combines the two worst features of modern American life. It's violence punctuated by committee meetings. (George Will)

  • A tie game is like kissing your sister. (Hugh Daugherty)

  • Trying to sneak a fastball past Hand Aaron was like trying to sneak the sun past a rooster. (Curt Simmons)

  • Cricket is baseball on Valium. (Robin Williams)

Life

  • Life is painting a picture, not doing a sum. (Oliver Wendell Holmes)

  • Life is no cleaner than your kitchen. If you mean to cook your dinner, you must expect to soil your hands. The real art is getting them clean again. (Honore de Balzac)

  • I would rather think of life as a good book. The more you get into it, the more it begins to come together and make sense. (Harold Kushner)

  • Life is the childhood of our immortality. (Johann Von Goethe)

Love

  • Love is friendship set to music. (Joseph Cossman)

  • One of the best things about love--the feeling of being wrapped, like a gift, in understanding. (Anatole Broyard)

  • Falling in love consists merely in uncorking the imagination and bottling common sense. (Helen Rowland)

  • To love and be loved is to feel the sun from both sides. (David Viscott)

  • God is love. Those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them. (1 John 4:16)

I hope these quotes will lead you into thoughts of gratitude as we prepare to deliver food to several thousand families who are struggling this year. I appreciate the excellent leadership of Brent Howell in the process, and I look forward to serving with you next Tuesday (after leading our county commissioners in prayer).

I'll see you on Sunday!

Message from Sanctuary Redesign Committee

The Sanctuary Redesign Committee has had the opportunity to review the comments, issues, concerns, and questions submitted to Keith Headley after the recent meeting with the congregation. After reading these comments carefully, we have decided to expand our timeline for session approval in order to address more fully the current concerns and issues expressed. We also want to clarify the main goals of the sanctuary redesign:

  • Greater flexibility in the chancel for a wide variety of worship styles and programs

  • Improved lighting, sound, and audiovisual capacity

  • The creation of an ambiance that is more accessible to younger generations

  • Replacement or repair of dated and damaged furniture and fixtures

Everything else is a means to these ends. We have set November 28 as our next meeting with the congregation. In addition, Keith Headley is working on publishing a newsletter that will respond to issues sent to Session and to better define our purpose. Thus, we will not be going to MFT or to Session in November with a final recommendation.

We do appreciate the feedback we have received and we want to respond as completely as we can. It is our hope that we can build a common understanding and enthusiasm for this redesign project that we all can enjoy. In order to achieve that goal, I hope you will be able to attend our next forum at 11:00 AM on November 28.

Roger Quadhamer, Chair
Committee: Rob Anderson, Ron Gentry, Keith Headley, Jennifer Langdon, Rev. Neal Neuenschwander, Allan Petker, Gary Smith, and Virginia Wade
