"This Could Be Fun"

One of my favorite events in the life of our church is Vacation Bible School. I love to see all those children streaming through the church, and I love to see all of those church members who volunteer. We often have a strong contingent of teenagers, and we've long had a great contingent of senior citizens who have participated in this ministry for decades. Those people are such an inspiration to me! As I told some of them who were deacons this morning, "you're exactly the kind of person that I want to be when I grow up!"

Part of growing up is making changes, of course, and all of us will be adapting to a change in our worship space this Sunday morning. It's easy at times like this to think about all the things we will be "missing" for a time: pews, organs, stained glass, and so on. But it's so much healthier to think about all the things we still have: handbells, choirs, preaching, communion, and the chance to worship God in a whole new space.

When I think of McDonald Hall, I think of all the great craft projects that were made in VBS throughout the years. Then I think of all fabulous programs I have seen in that space--especially children's musicals and youth musicals that really "rocked the house." Then I think of the Alpha Ministry which was such a great blessing there, and all the Missionary speakers I have seen up in that room throughout the years. In just the last 2 years, I remember the Global Mission Fair and Alternative Christmas Market which has also filled that room with joy.

Now, I have the chance to add still another happy memory to my personal collection of good memories in McDonald Hall: Sunday Morning worship with all of you! Dozens have already pitched in to make this new endeavor work, and still more will be joining us at 9 a.m. this Saturday morning to prepare. By the time you read these words, the bell tables will be set up, the grand piano will be moved, a communion table will be in place, a pulpit will be prepared, and 150 chairs will be ready to use. We will also try some creative touches in this temporary worship space which could be hard to implement in the sanctuary.

In short, I think it's going be fun to worship upstairs at 9:30 a.m. this Sunday morning with all of you. I'm sure there will be some kinks that need to be worked out, and I know this will take some patience on your part. But I am also confident that the graceful spirit of you who have supported countless joy-filled programs in McDonald Hall will make this worship season into a wonderful experience too.
