"The Disco Decade"

Having now devoted sermons to the founders of our church and the generations of First Presbyterians that fought in each of our world wars, it's time to turn our attention to the survivors of our nation's next biggest crisis: the 1970s! Of course, I say that tongue-in-cheek, but if you've ever tried to look good in leisure suits or caused sparks in a microwave or tried to explain to your children what actually happened in the back of those VW vans, you probably know what I'm talking about. You may not have risked your life at Normandy or Verdun, but, to paraphrase FDR, the embarrassment of some choices can “live in infamy” forever!

Fortunately, there were several good things that came out of the 1970s here at First Presbyterian Church. The first was a closer look at the social teachings of our savior, Jesus Christ. Then, from that look, came a whole series of new outreach efforts. Some of these were:

The “Fish” food pantry for the hungry (now part of Harbor Interfaith Services)

Church-sponsored Bible studies in the prisons and worship services in our local retirement homes.

The Hoffman “Half Way Houses” for returning inmates from Terminal Island

San Pedro's “Meals on Wheels” program for shut-ins

A major commitment by key church groups to “adopt” several refugees from Southeast Asia who were helped to find food, shelter, and employment until they could “make it” on their own here in the USA, and

A growing cadre of female church leaders who learned to stand “toe to toe” with our strong men.

This Sunday, I'll be preaching about the decades when“baby boomers” came of age, the lessons we have learned, and the blessings God has brought through the tumult of that era. I'll be using Luke 4, verses 18-19, a long neglected text that many scholars now call the “Mission Statement” of our Lord. You might be surprised to hear exactly what it says.

I'll see you in church!
