Pastor's
Corner "When God Heals" This Sunday's Biblical Text comes from the Dedication of God's Temple in Jerusalem during the reign of King Solomon. It would be typical on this occasion for King Solomon to look back on the sacred history of God's people and celebrate God's faithfulness in the past. Instead, King Solomon hears God speak to the future:
“When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. (2 Chronicles 7: 13-14) Isn't that an interesting passage? To paraphrase an old country song, God doesn't promise them a "rose garden" or, in the imagery of their day, a bottomless bowl of figs. Instead, He tells them plainly that there will be hardships in spite of the great temple they have built. But He also gives them a remedy for these problems in verse 14: humility, prayer, searching, and repentance. Isn't that a wonderful promise for all of God's people to retain? Countless generations of Christians who were feeling a bit "beat up" have already claimed this promise and experienced the blessing that this verse describes. This Sunday morning, I'll be sharing some of their stories (especially those that happened here within the last 20 years), and I pray that each of us will be inspired to claim this promise too. I'll see you in church!
