"It's Time For Company!"

This is such an exciting weekend for our church! First, we are hosting an "open house" from 3 to 7 p.m. on Friday afternoon for every member of this community to tour the new sanctuary (and other parts of the church, if desired). We will show the new video system, we will show the new sound system, we will show the beautiful new furnishings, we will show the new lighting system, and we will show the great variety of programs this new design enables us to have. We will also show our deep desire to reach young parents and young adults who use electronic media to communicate in a very different fashion than their parents did.

Then, during worship on Sunday morning, we will demonstrate some great things that haven't changed here at First Pres--a great choral music program, a great collection of handbells, a great array of dramatic sounds on the organ, and a great commitment to hear and follow the call of God. From the very beginning of our church, a large part of that commitment involved commitment to the community that we serve, and several community service leaders will be will be joining us this week to celebrate that commitment. In particular, we will host:

Tahia Hayslett, the Executive Director of Harbor Interfaith Services, a non-profit agency which began an a community food panty in our church basement.  Gradually, they outgrew this facility and added transitional housing and support for families that are in need. Soon, they will open a beautiful new facility right down town.

Gloria Lockhart, the Executive Director of the Toberman Neighborhood Center, a venerable outreach to neighbors in need that began more than 100 years ago.  They moved here to San Pedro during the 1930s, and several members of our church have supported their efforts to protect underprivileged children and prevent the spread of gangs.

Luis Lozano, the Executive Director of the Beacon House Association, a residential treatment program for alcoholic and drug addicted men that our church has supported for decades.  Each participant in this program is taught that "self-esteem comes from esteemable acts," and success requires a lot of community service.

Trevino Cochran, the President of Achieve Youth Services, an after school program for children and youth that is housed here at First Pres.  This program focuses on academic skills, recreation, and character development.  It has built confidence and respect in scores of young women and men through the years.

Mary Garland, the President of San Pedro's Meals On Wheels,  a non-profit which provides good, hot food to seniors and shut-ins throughout our city.  This food has been prepared and sent from our church kitchen for almost 40 years.

Finally, I'm excited to say that we will receive a special commendation from Janice Hahn, who serves our community in the United States Congress. Before being elected to that position just this year, Ms. Hahn served on the Los Angeles City Council, where she supported a vast array of community service groups. She has always been a great advocate for San Pedro.

In short, it's time for company here at First Presbyterian--including the parents of all those children in our choirs. I hope you will join me in rolling out the "welcome mat." You might need to come a bit early to get a back seat. I'll see you in church!
