"Stargazing"

January 13, 2012

Do everything without grumbling or complaining, so that you may become. . . children of God without fault in a crooked generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe. (Phil 2:15)

If you haven't already done so during the last few weeks, take a few moments sometime this week to enjoy the winter stars. Shortly after sunset, you can see Venus very clearly in the West (above the PV Peninsula)--it's the brightest start in the sky for at least two hours. The second brightest star will be Jupiter, high up overhead. Soon, you can also see the large constellation Orion ("the hunter") high in the Southern sky, along with his 2 faithful dogs, Sirius and Procyon (both on his lower left). The head of Taurus ("the bull") will be just to the right of Orion--you'll notice it forms a small "V" on a good, clear night. And the twin stars of Gemini (Castor and Pollux), will be about 15 degrees above Orion's left shoulder. The Big Dipper (also called "The Bear") sort of "hibernates" in the Winter--you won't see her till late at night, but the crown of Cassiopeia (which looks like either a "W" or an "M") does shine brightly in the north sky on these Winter nights.

Of course, the Port of Los Angeles is not a great place for stargazing--there is way too much "pollution" from man-made light. But even here, the lights God made several billion years ago continue to shine brightly in the distance. At first, you might not notice them. They are not like our spot lights that are used to draw attention, they are not like our flood lights that are used to keep burglars away, and they are not like neon lights that are used to paint bright words. But they are bright lights which carry their own beauty--a beauty that has endured for millenia.

In the second chapter of Philippians, Paul says that Christians who live humbly, submitting to God's will while refusing to fight or bicker over petty, selfish things, are very much like those stars shining in the distance. Unlike spot lights, they don't demand attention, and they don't make a lot of noise. But they do make a beautiful picture of peace and love and grace for those who take the time to see. We'll be talking about that picture in church this Sunday morning. So, I hope you'll do a bit of "stargazing" this week with me.

I'll see you in church!
