This then is the keystone to the
prayer group. We gather to ask prayers in accordance
with this Scripture. Therefore, it is important that we have
agreement among the
members. We get this agreement very carefully. We make sure that
we are in agreement
about what we are going to pray. Normally one person is asked to
write out in advance
what they think would be agreeable to the rest. Then we discuss
it and modify it if we
think necessary. Then it becomes a part of our standard prayers.
Each week these
prayer cards are handed out in a random manner and the person
receiving the card and
only that person prays for the action. They dont
necessarily follow the same wording
but they do maintain the sense of the card. This way we make sure
we are in agreement.
Some of the prayers that have been developed over the years are
listed below and you
are certainly welcome to come into agreement with us and pray
these prayers. The
Prayer Group meets every Wednesday in the Church Library at 7 PM
and all are
welcome to attend.
- The Elderly
- Dear God: We have a deep concern
for the elderly -- not just those in our families and
church, but everywhere. Some are in convalescent homes,
but lonely. Others are abused emotionally and physically.
We thank you Lord, that you care for each one; and we ask
that you bring into their lives someone who can be your
minister to meet their individual needs. Father, may they
abide in the knowledge of your love as they face each
day; and may they look forward to that day when they will
meet you face to face. In Jesus' name we thank you for
your love and care of the elderly. Amen
- Gangs
- We have prayed that the Gospel
would in some way reach gangs and that they would accept
it and change their lives. We believe the Gospel is being
heard and that many lives have been changed and many
hearts softened as a result. But there are still many who
are committing horrendous crimes upon humanity and
property. We pray that through the power of the Holy
Spirit they will be confronted and stopped before they
can carry out these horrible attacks. In Jesus' name we
pray, Amen.
- Medical Research
- Father, we thank you that so many
people are involved in medical research. We thank you
that there have been so many breakthroughs as a result,
and that almost daily we hear of new ones. We ask you to
continue to guide and bless all who are involved in
research work, and lead them to even greater success. For
we ask it in the name of Jesus, Amen.
- Victims of Natural
Disasters
- Heavenly Father: We pray for all
whom experienced losses and inconvenience as a result of
hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, floods, drought, and
fires. May they feel your presence and know that through
you their needs will be met. Help them grow in their
faith. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
- Our Church
- Thank you, God, for blessing us
with the body of believers called First Presbyterian
Church. Thank you for hearing and meeting our spiritual
and physical needs whether for health, travel mercies,
career and retirement satisfaction, fellowship, or that
closer walk with Jesus Christ our Savior. May we be a
light to this community as we strive to truly be the body
of Christ and, thus, glorify our Lord in whose name we
pray. Amen.
- Problems in Our Nation
- The problems in our nation are ever
before us. They may not touch us personally, but they can
be emotionally disturbing to us. The spiritual values set
forth in your word are discounted as antiquated and
irrelevant; human life is devalued; and leaders place
personal gain over their civic responsibilities. Lord, we
are experiencing sorrow, but we know that the answer is
rooted in revival; and we have hope. We ask that you
would bring about expanded growth to the renewal that is
taking place. Pour out your blessings so that truly we
may be a nation "under God" and that righteous
leaders will emerge. We believe that our whole nation
needs to trust in you. In Jesus' name, Amen.
- The Media
- We have asked that you block all
reporting that misrepresents your work in the world, and
we pray that you and your word will be properly honored
through media reporting. We believe your are raising up
media personnel who will present the news in such a way
that it will demonstrate the principles Christ taught and
for which he died. We believe you will be glorified
through the powerful influence of the media. We pray in
Jesus' name, Amen.
- Peace in the World
- We pray for peace in the world, but
wars continue. We ask for the calling forth of righteous
leaders, but tyrants gain control. But, God, we do not
despair because we know from reading your word that times
of tribulation will continue to surface until every knee
is bowed before you. Father, help us to be a part of the
solution as we work for the salvation of the lost and the
healing of differences. We thank you for the many who are
claiming your name daily and for the world leaders who do
allow you to direct their lives. In Jesus' name we give
you glory for facets of peace throughout the world. Amen.
- Abused Children
- Merciful Father: It is difficult to
try to understand the suffering that little children are
having to endure because of abuse. We hear of atrocities
almost daily that are imposed upon them in so many ways:
the use of words, bodily harm, and even the taking of
lives. We ask you, Lord to protect the children of the
world from the ravages of cruel and heartless adults. The
little ones want only loving care and the attention,
which they so rightly deserve. Jesus loves the little
children, and so do we. Our prayer is for an end to all
child abuse, for we ask in His Holy Name. Amen.
- Our Youth
- The youth of our entire nation are
confronted daily with Satan's deception, and they need to
know you as their Lord and Savior. Thank you that many
have already turned to you for purpose in their lives. We
ask that you would raise up more leaders for these youth
so they can hear the message of your healing love and
then spread that message to their peers. We know that a
personal relationship with Jesus Christ is the answer to
problems of depression, meaningful social relationships,
career preparation, and the many other concerns that
besiege our youth. We ask that Satan's stronghold in
their lives will be broken. We pray these things in
Jesus' name, Amen.
- Church Leaders
- Father: We thank you for our church
leaders, the Staff, Elders, deacons, teachers, Commission
members, and all others who are entrusted with the
responsibilities of your kingdom's work in our midst. We
ask that you enable each leader to understand and accept
that Christ needs to be the center of their lives and
given priority over all else. Grant that they may accept
their leadership roles with enthusiasm and joy, and that
they may participate in your work in a manner that will
bring honor and glory to you. In so doing, may the lost
come to know you as Lord and Savior. In Jesus' name we
pray, Amen.
- The United States
- We pray for the healing of our land
- spiritually, morally, financially, in our leadership,
and in matters of race, family values, education, and
sexually. II Chronicles 7:14 reminds us that "If my
people, which are called by me name, shall humble
themselves and pray, and seek my face, and turn from
their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, and will
forgive their sin, and heal their land." We claim
this promise for our land. In Jesus' name, Amen.
- Villa and Harbor Terrace
Ministries
- We pray and believe that our
ministry at the Villa and Harbor Terrace is effective and
that the residents are being comforted and challenged to
serve you as a result of it. We ask that you continue to
bless all participants in these two ministries. We ask
this in Jesus' name, Amen.
- Caring Ministry
- Dear Father: Our Caring Ministry
has been re-established. We believe it can bring the
entire congregation into a closer relationship with each
other and with you. So we ask that you lead and direct
those responsible for overseeing the work of this
ministry. For we ask it in the name of Jesus, Amen.
- Our Pastor and His Wife
- Our Father: We thank you that you
called our Pastor and his wife to lead our congregation.
We ask that you give them the wisdom, guidance, and
spiritual insight they need to be effective ministering
servants. Help them to be good stewards of time, energy,
and influence to bring the lost to salvation, and
believers to a deeper commitment to Christ. Protect them
from the ways of the world that would lead them astray in
their marriage and ministry. Bless them with health,
peace, and everlasting love. We pray in Jesus' name,
Amen.
